On the Road in Flagstaff, Searching for Route 66 Memories

Tuesday August 15, 2006
I headed north to the pinewoods of Arizona today, dodging raindrops and lightning bolts. I am in search of Route 66 memories and have already found a few here in Flagstaff. I plan to walk a 6 mile route tomorrow that promises to take me past some true Route 66 businesses while enjoying the cool respite from desert heat. This morning, I stopped in to Macy's European Coffee House and Bakery and had a great strawberry bar, made with lots of healthy oats (we won't mention the brown sugar!). I picked up a few essentials at the local chain grocery store and encountered some Navajo women elders in long skirts and beautiful turquoise jewelry. Also in the check out line were men with leathery faces wearing cowboy hats. This is northern Arizona, and it is still a Wild West adventure!
