Marfa, Texas Mystery Lights Festival Coming Up Labor Day Weekend
Wednesday August 23, 2006
Way out west in Big Bend country, infamous Marfa, Texas is having a big festival on the courthouse lawn. They are celebrating those dancing mystery lights people look for each evening. No one knows the exact origin of the lights yet visitors gather at the local viewing center each evening as the sun goes down. Variously described as campfires, phosphorescent minerals, swamp gas, static electricity, St. Elmo's Fire, and "ghost lights," the lights reportedly change colors, move around, and change in intensity." Jason Brooks visited the Marfa Lights Viewing Center and, despite not seeing any of the mysterious lights, had a great time. He writes, "While everyone was looking up and out into the dark mountains, a rather large tarantula wandered onto our platform. Luckily someone noticed it moving and very quickly it became the nighttime entertainment." At the festival you can enjoy music, street dancing, games, food and beer and wine sans tarantulas. Celebrate the lights in Marfa, Texas.
