Grand Canyon West Skywalk Slides Into Place

Wednesday March 7, 2007
The massive steel and glass skywalk is now being moved out over the Grand Canyon. Yesterday and today, crews wheeled the skywalk over the edge of the Canyon. They jacked it several inches above ground, placed it on a concrete runway and began wheeling it over the Canyon's lip. More on the Roll-out.

Once considered an urban legend, the Skywalk is fast becoming a reality. Soon tourists can put on protective booties and walk out over the Canyon. They will be able to look down 4,000 feet below them.

Apollo 11 Astronaut Dr. Buzz Aldrin, known for making historic first steps on the moon, will lead the “First Walk” on the Grand Canyon Skywalk on Tuesday, March 20. I am thrilled to be able to cover this exciting event. More on the VIP Grand Opening.
