First Flight, First Walk - Anticipation of the Opening of the Grand Canyon Skywalk
Monday March 19, 2007
For Astronaut Buzz Aldrin the “First Walk” on the Grand Canyon Skywalk on Tuesday, March 20 will be an opportunity to launch a controversial West Canyon tourist attraction. While I find this both fascinating and exciting, I have been given the opportunity to fly to the Grand Opening with Westwind Aviation, known for their scenic air tours in single engine Cessna Caravans. This is a "first flight" for me! I have never flown over Arizona in a small plane and am thrilled to have the opportunity to see the beautiful land from the air and avoid a 5 hour automobile trip to and from the Canyon. I will be reporting back from the Skywalk opening and will provide more information on how you can charter a plane from Westwind Aviation for a once in a lifetime tour of Arizona's most scenic areas. I’m sure it’s a great view, but $25 seems like an awfully steep price for a 15-minue look-see, especially if you have children with you.
I know what you are saying…but after attending the Grand Opening I have a different feel for it. It is beautiful up there, very unique, and the money will ensure self-sufficiency for this impoverished tribe. I believe it’s money well spent. I will see if there is a break for children. I wrote an article on the opening and will follow with more general tourist information.
