A Tough Decision - No Holiday Border Crossing to Nogales This Year

Thursday December 4, 2008
I love going to Nogales, Sonora, Mexico for a little shopping, lunch at La Roca and a change of scenery. I love supporting the people there who depend on visitors from the U.S. side to keep food on the table. So, after consulting a number of locals and scouring the Southern Arizona papers for a realistic viewpoint on the drug violence in Mexican border towns, I made a tough decision. I'm not going across the border this month.

My friend and I will still head for Southern Arizona for a holiday getaway but we'll stop short of going across the border. What led me to this decision? Well, although one local said she still crosses the border to go to a Mexican beauty shop ("I'd die for a good haircut," she said) I keep coming across articles such as this one in the Arizona Daily Star of Tucson.

So we'll head south in search of a little Arizona Christmas cheer and visit the artsy village of Tubac, staying at the Tubac Country Inn, and take a day trip to visit Patagonia. It's close to the border and very interesting, but Christmas won't be the same this year. Watch for our story and photos on Christmas in Southern Arizona.

Please don’t bypass Nogales, Arizona !!!

We have great shops in our Downtown area. We have a variety of stores from higher end clothing to fun Korean shops. Bazar de Mexico has wonderful Mexican nic-nacs. We have great restaurants like Mr.C’s that is owned by one of the family members of La Caverna as well as many Mexican restaurants to choose from. We went to La Roca a couple of Sundays ago where they feature a $ 10.00 Sunday breakfast buffet. But if you use the downtown entry your just a couple of blocks away.

Nogales has a nice museum, thePimeria Alta Historical Museum, thats open on weekends.
There is an Arizona Rangers and Cowbelles Museums open most, if not every, weekends, located at the Historic 1904 Courthouse. Not too mention that this is the start of the Historic Anza Trail and features a temporary exhibit of David Rickman illustrations of the Anza expedition trail

There’s a lovely art gallery, The Hilltop Gallery, that often has different exhibits as well.

The bird sanctuary at Meadow Hills. We have an “Evening of Christmas Music” concert on December 19th at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish.

I’m sure you may be aware that we have all this and more, but if not, let me know and I can send you some more information.

I’d love to explore Nogales. If you can have the Chamber of Commerce get ahold of me that would be great! Liz

I couldn’t agreed more with Mari, she is giving you alot of information on Santa Cruz County!
From wineries, hiking, bird santuaries, lakes. The 300 year-old cattle ranch, ‘Hacienda Corona De Guevavi” favored by John Wayne, is now an inn. Visit the Duke’s suite, one of five themed bedrooms. Bullfighter and artist Salvador Corona painted the murals on the courtyard walls.

These are some of the attractions that we can mentioned to you!

I would like to send more information about this county, if you would provide me with you address.

Please call us or send us and email if you have any other questions,

Hope to see you soon!
