Arizona's Petrified Forest National Park, A Rainbow of Colors
Petrified Wood Photography

From Elizabeth R. Rose, About.com

Arizona's Petrified Forest is not a forest at all. It is a grasslands landscape filled with beautiful specimens of petrified wood. Petrified wood was once a tree. Millions of years ago the forests covering Northern Arizona were buried under a sea of mud, sand, and volcanic ash. Silicate replaced the wood fibers and pressure formed the rock. The result? A rainbow of beauty in the logs and pieces of wood that remain as rocks, forever.

The Petrified Forest National Park stretches north and south between Interstate 40 and Highway 180 and is best accessed near Holbrook, Arizona.
