Page History:
Before Page and Lake Powell there was a beautiful Colorado River Canyon. In April 1956, the United States Congress authorized the Bureau of Reclamation to build a dam on the Colorado River and the area near present day Page was selected. Page is a very new town and was founded in 1957 as a housing camp for workers building the Glen Canyon Dam. In the early days, the inhabitants of Page really roughed it. Eventually more modern stores, a whole street of churches and permanent homes were built. Page is growing through tourism and is home to a increasing number of retirees.Visit the Slot Canyons Near Page - Upper Antelope and Lower Antelope:
You'll need a guide to visit the slot canyons, which are on Navajo land. There are actually two canyons, upper and lower Antelope Canyons. Most visitors take a tour to upper Antelope Canyon. From your jeep or van, it is just a short sandy walk into the flat canyon. Lower Antelope Canyon is more challenging. There are ladders to get into the canyon. Enjoying Immense Lake Powell:
Lake Powell looks like Monument Valley after a huge flood. The rock formations are fantastic, the hidden slot canyons can be explored by kayak and houseboats can still find secluded places to tie up for the night. The brand new Antelope Pointe Marina in Page is a great place to rent a power boat, ski boat, jet ski, or kayak. Their luxury houseboats are ideal for family reunions or getaway weekends. Be sure and explore the expanse of the lake and go to places like Rainbow Bridge National Monument, a beautiful natural bridge. When we were there the water was low. We approached via motorboat and wound our way through the narrow canyons to the dock. Once we tied up, we took a short hike to Rainbow Bridge. It was peaceful and one of our traveling companions remarked that it was so quiet she could hear the sound of a raven hopping along the banks of the water.Tour Glen Canyon Dam:
Glen Canyon Natural History Association, a non-profit educational organization, in cooperation with the Bureau of Reclamation, provides guided tours through Glen Canyon Dam on a year-round basis. Lake Powell National is referred to as the “Crown Jewel” of golf in Northern Arizona. The championship 18-hole course opened for play in September of 1995. Sitting on a high mesa overlooking the impressive Glen Canyon Dam, beautiful Lake Powell, and Vermillion Cliffs, this scenic layout is a visual treat as well as a player’s delight. Page, Arizona is a great place to vacation. It's right on the shores of Lake Powell, is accessible by air, is in the heart of Navajo Country and has a fascinating history of it's own.A great place to start learning about Page and the area is the Powell Museum on North Lake Powell Blvd. You'll learn about the Native American history and about Major John Wesley Powell, the Civil War veteran who explored the Glen Canyon area and, ultimately, the Grand Canyon.
There are quite a few motels in the area, some fun restaurants such as the Dam Bar and Grille, and Fiesta Mexicana known for margaritas.
A small airport services Page. Great Lakes Airlines flies into Royce K. Knight Field. Westwind Air Tours also maintains a base of operations there.
