Norbert Peshlakai, Navajo, is an award-winning gold and silversmith with a unique contemporary style. Peshlakai Vision Studio, 206 S. Third St. in Gallup, is where you may find Norbert at work when he is not traveling to exhibit at Native American art shows. The studio is on the Ancient Way Arts Trail map.
Norbert Peshlakai was born in 1953. His work can be termed contemporary yet it is firmly rooted in the navajo culture. He often incorporates carefully chosen stones in his work. You may see his shadow box jewelry, miniature silver and gold bowls, jars, and seed pots.
Peshlakai entered the realm of art as a painter but later studied jewelry making and developed his skill and unique style. His work, especially his seed pots, are highly collectible and can be found in museums and collections world-wide.
I visited Peshlakai as part of my Ancient Way Arts Tour (map-guided) and was pleased to find him at work in his studio. He often does custom work and was working on pieces that had been special ordered. If he is in his studio when you visit Gallup, I encourage you to knock at the door and enter. The studio windows, as when I was there, may be covered and it is not always clear that the studio is open.
