Finding the Resort
Turn left immediately after Tlaquepaque on Portal, they said. And, I did. I went through the Tlaquepaque parking lot and up a road past the Institute of Eco-Tourism and smack dab into El Portal. It looked like a nice place, but it wasnt my destination. I retraced my steps, looked off to the right and found a booth with an attendant. The sign read. Los Abrigados. That was it. I headed past the booth into the bustling parking lot with the immense fountain and headed under the arches to the main reception area.
First Impressions are Southwest Impressions
Los Abrigados Resort and Spa definitely had a Hispanic influence. It reminded me of some of the new resorts in Mexico. It was the grand scale of the fountain and multi-story lobby that left me with that impression. The lobby was busy with a concierge and families reading pamphlets.
I was greeted at the reception desk. My room wasnt ready (I arrived early) but we did the registration and I was told to return in a half hour. No problem, I thought. The Tlaquepaque artisans village was right next door and it was a photographers dream. I wound my way from patio to patio, went through a couple of galleries and enjoyed the atmosphere.
Los Abrigados Suites
Los Abrigados is a large suites only property affiliated with ILX Resorts. The resort is on 22 acres of landscaping and trees with walkways connecting the 184 suites. The suite I stayed in was very spacious and offered a full kitchen as well as two bedrooms and two full baths. The Saltillo tile floors and kiva fireplace ensured a Southwestern feel to the suite. A surprise was the double outdoor tile shower. Imagine, you can shower with a view of the fall foliage and bright blue sky. There were front and back decks and a wood deck for outdoor gatherings with friends. The front room had a glimpse of the Red Rocks.
There are two-story buildings of suites spread throughout the grounds. I found the suite to be quiet, even with such bustling activity at the resort.
Rates
The rates for suites range from $225 for the Jerome Suite with a King bed or two double beds to The Celebrity House at $1750 which has two big bedrooms at it's own koi pond and private swimming pool. The Orchard Suite, where I stayed runs for $775 per night. (2006 Prices)
There are also cottages running from $110 for a King room and microwave/refrigerator, to the Historic Morris House, which sleeps 6, at $775.
History
Did you know that Sedona, Arizona is named after Sedona, the wife of T.C. Schnebly, the man who first owned the Los Abrigados property in 1901? Oak Creek, which flows from the San Francisco Peaks in Flagsaff and runs through Los Abrigados, was used by Schnebly as a water source for his farm. The Owenby Irrigation Ditch, established in 1902, still runs in front of the historic Stone House on the property.
So Much to Do
When you get to your suite at Los Abrigados, turn on a TV and enjoy a 90 minute tour of Sedona and plenty of shopping ideas. Its a good way to preview shops and find out where you might want to go as well as places you might want to skip. The program is available in-room via Sedona TV 16. You can get a taste of Sedona before you visit by looking at the Red Rock TV website . The site features over 115 short video segments.
Also in the rooms are guidebooks and a listing of the Los Abrigados Resort offerings. Some of the fun things you can do while you are at Los Abrigados are:
- Tennis
- Mini-Golf
- Staff-led Hikes
- Movies in Hart Garden
- Wine Tasting Classes
- Tennis Clinics
- Tai QI/QI Gong
- Stress Reduction Classes
I found Los Abrigados to be very family-friendly. From the layout of the large suites, to the amenities such as guest laundry and family activities, Los Abrigados is very appealing for a family vacation. You can cook for your family in a full kitchen, watch TV and DVDs and take a walk on a meandering path to the pool. The resort offers interesting activities for children.
On my walking tour of the grounds I found the following fun things for kids:
- Separate Children's Pool
- Basketball
- Mini-Golf
- Walk along Oak Creek
- Bird Sanctuary
