Heading to L'Auberge de Sedona

I had spent the day enjoying the shops of Sedona and touring the ancient ruins in a pink jeep. All these activities took place on the bustling main street of Sedona, Highway 89. While I marvelled at the Red Rock views, I had no idea that below me was a beautiful quiet canyon, the location of L'Auberge de Sedona resort. Once I looked at my directions, I realized that I would drive south from the Pink Jeep offices and then immediately left down a small entrance road, L'Auberge Lane, and become entranced by the beauty of wooded Oak Creek. The lodge was easy to find, parking was convenient and registration was just inside the door. I quickly noticed that the staff was very welcoming and attentive. Excellent customer service is definitely part of the L'Auberge experience.

First Impressions - Cabins in the Woods?

I was assigned to Cottage #19 and headed down the little path past grassy areas with wooden bench swings, past signs directing me to the restaurant and to the cottage, my destination for the night. I was thrilled to see that the porch looked out over a beautiful creek and that there was plenty of evening sun filtering through the trees for some relaxing time outdoors. What I didn't expect was the look of the inside. This was no rustic cabin! I opened the door, heard lovely music and saw a lighted room. It was absolutely gorgeous. From the king bed with down comforters and beautifully carved dark wood headboard to the firplace with a mantle clock, this room was meant to be a luxurious retreat. I enjoyed finding such touches as flowers on the pedestal sink and wooden high beamed ceilings.

Enjoying the Resort

I decided to explore the grounds before the sun set. Since my "cabin" was creekside, it made sense to follow the creek and see what I would come upon. I saw ducks and couples relaxing in wooden chairs by the creek enjoying a glass of wine. I turned a corner, and saw a beautifully lighted scene with the rapids of the creek in the background. It looked like a chef preparing a meal on a decorated outdoor table. I approached quietly and inquired about the filming session. Evidently the L'Auberge Restaurant's chef was being filmed preparing a luscious Maine lobster salad for local Arizona television show. Afterwards, I marveled at the beauty of this creekside restaurant which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.

My usual afternoon swim would have entailed a trip up the hill to the sister property of L'Auberge which overlooks the canyon. There used to be a little cable car which would transport guests, however, it was no longer in use. Instead, staff offered to transport me via resort cart to the top of the hill. For the really adventurous, there is a hiking trail.

New Spa

I toured the brand new Spa at L'Auberge and found it to be a retreat within a retreat. With both couples and individual treatment rooms, a relaxing spa treatment or massage would an ideal addition to a luxury weekend or vacation. They offer a wide range of spa services such as reflexology, swedish massage, deep tissue massage, shiatsu and all sorts of luscious bathing and body treatments. The atmosphere was certainly conducive to relaxation with soft music and low lighting. Ask about their spa packages.

Activities

The concierge at the resort can arrange anything from a jeep tour or horseback riding to dinner reservations. Their website offers suggestions for activities and scenic drives. Whatever, Seona offers, the staff at L'Auberge can arrange for you. It is a luxury in itself to have their recommendations and arrangements handled efficently and with a focus on making your stay stress-free.

Rooms

There are three distinct settings: Creekside and Gardenside Cottages, the Lodge, and the large Creek House. The Lodge is reminiscent of National Park lodges and has rooms that would be ideal for couples. But my favorites were the creekside cottages where, on the outside, you could enjoy the creek and feel like you were back in your childhood camp resort, and on the inside be surprised at the luxury and country european decor. The cottages have sleeper sofas in addition to a king-sized bed. There are also two bedroom cottages. The Creek House, which would be fantastic for a wedding or family reunion, is immense and has a wonderful creekside lawn. Close-by is another grassy area with a covered area overlooking the creek. There are several options at L'Auberge for scenic Sedona weddings.
