The Macy's Mystique

They said, "You have to go to Macy's." Heck, Macy's, to me, was the department store in downtown San Francisco where I worked when I was 19 years old. That was the vision that the word Macy's conjured up in my mind. I came to Flagstaff once, didn't make it to Macy's and so put it high on my list for this return trip. As I headed in to town, I crossed the railroad tracks and found myself in a cheery neighborhood with a youth hostel, people standing in clusters along the streets discussing politics and their plans for the day, and some buildings with picnic and bistro tables set up on the sidewalk. I looked up, read the colorful sign, and there it was... Macy's European Coffee House. It was a '60's kind of place with people sitting in front petting their dogs and reading the alternative newspapers.

I headed inside. After driving for almost 3 hours I was ready for some of their highly touted baked goods. The place had well-worn wooden tables and chairs, bright Macy's T-shirts hung from the ceiling and stacks of brown paper bagged coffees were available for sale. The staff was friendly (no credit cards taken today, the sign said) and allowed me to write a check for my purchase. I opted for the strawberry bar, a very large piece, and settled at a table to read some interesting articles in the local arts and music scene paper.

The food was excellent and, around me, people came and went, worked at their computers and greeted each other. The place was very busy, in a consistent way, yet the service was efficient and people moved along coffee in hand.

About Macy's

Native Californian Tim Macy opened Macy’s in downtown Flagstaff in 1980. Macy’s was the first commercial coffee roaster in Arizona. They roast their own coffee and purchase beans from small cooperatives. They are definitely Vegan-friendly and offer many alternatives such as soy milk for coffee drinks and smoothies and healthy baked goods. I hear their oatmeal and fruit makes for a great breakfast.

Macy's offers pasta dishes and meals later in the day. It is the kind of place where you might happen onto a poetry reading.

Happy to Have Found Macy's

I am happy to have put Macy's at the top of my list on this trip. It is a place I could wile away the hours working or just people watching. As I left, the outdoor tables were filling up and people were carrying coffee to the co-op laundry next door.
