When you take your Grand Canyon Railway Trip, there are some important things to know. And, since we have enjoyed a journey aboard this special train, we've added a few helpful tips for travelers.

  • Spend time in the area. The town of Williams is a small mountain town. Route 66 passes through Williams. Interstate 40 replaced William's segment of Route 66 in 1984. Route 66 buffs will want to spend some time in Williams. Allow about an hour to drive from Flagstaff to Williams. It is best to arrive before dark. It is easier to find your way.
  • Prepare for the elevation. Williams, and the Grand Canyon are in Arizona's high country. The elevation at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon is 7,000 feet. So be prepared to be a little out of breath as you climb stairs, or take the shuttle to the rim provided by the Grand Canyon Railway.
  • Bring Sunscreen. On sunny days, be sure and bring a broad-brimmed hat and use sunscreen. It is easier to get sunburned at higher elevations.
  • Drink plenty of water. It is easier to get dehydrated at higher elevations.
  • Dress in layers. While you may be warm while on the train, you can't predict when the winds will kick up at the Grand Canyon or the temperature will change as a storm approaches.
  • Consider purchasing an in-depth guide to the railway trip when you visit the shop in the Williams depot. Train buffs will enjoy the book, "Rails to the Rim," which is a milepost guide to the route. Mileposts will be easily visible as you ride the rails and you will love reading about the history and special sights of each area along the Grand Canyon Railway Tracks.
  • Remember that you will have only 3 - 4 hours at the Grand Canyon. There is much to see right near the depot. Historic El Tovar Lodge is worth a visit as well as Hopi House and Bright Angel Lodge. Just a short distance down the Rim Train you can enjoy Kolb Studio. My friend decided to hike just "a little way" down the Bright Angel Trail. We were on a day trip. Fortunately she kept an eye on her watch, but travelers are reminded that the train waits for no one!
  • Last but not least, reservations are a must. The earlier, the better especially during peak seasons and during the holiday Polar Express trips.
