It had been decided that two groups, one led by Aldrin and one led by Native American Astronaut John Herrington would start at opposite ends of the Skywalk and join together. The crowd cheered as the men slipped protective covers over their feet and stepped onto 3-inch-thick glass panes.
Aldrin confidently strode out to the end of the horseshoe shaped Skybridge waving and saluting (we wondered if he had looked down into the canyon). Microphone in hand, he declared the event a "magnificent first walk."
