The Cruel Winds
The winds didn't cooperate with Capt. Chuck and we just couldn't get near the field and the coveted prizes. He was disappointed. He wasn't able to meet his goal of competing for a prize but I met my goal of photographing the Fiesta from the air. He would be flying the next day and we hoped the winds would be better for him.
Landing Requires Skill
It was time to look for a place to land. The chase vehicle was on their way to our location. We told them we were going to land where the "Alpo Balloon" was landing. The "Alpo Balloon" was shaped like a can of dog food and was one of the special shapes balloons that were featured in the mass ascension. I figured they were hanging out over the neighborhoods to advertise their product to the dogs and owners below. Landing was no easy feat. Balloon pilots can manouever their crafts up or down. Sideways is not an option. We had to dodge buildings, fences, power lines and try for a place where the chase vehicle and the balloon's trailer, could reach us. It took awhile but soon we were on the ground, in the right place, after a very easy landing.
When You Go Ballooning
The official ride concession for the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta® is Rainbow Ryders. During the Fiesta they are the only balloon ride company authorized to take off from Balloon Fiesta Park.
There are balloon companies all over the world that area available for scenic rides. If you want an experience like mine, take your balloon ride at a balloon festival.
Liz's Tips
- Weight counts. Ask if there is a weight limit on the balloon ride you plan to take.
- Finess counts. You should be able to climb in and out of the basket and bend your knees to avoid shock upon landing. You will be standing during your ride. Wear comfortable slacks and sturdy shoes.
- Fear of heights counts. You will be flying high. It is not an ideal time to begin to conquer your fear of heights. I am a frequent air traveler and am used to looking down and watching things become smaller and smaller.
- Dress in layers. It can be cold and windy in some climates and altitudes. You might be surprised that the balloon's burner will add warmth. I ditched my jacket soon after liftoff. Don't forget sunscreen and a ball cap. Select one that fits well so that a breeze won't snatch it off your head.
- The pilot is in command. Look to the pilot for safety tips and if he or she says "lean on the basket" do it. They may need your weight to keep the balloon on the ground after landing.
