Visit Red River New Mexico for Outdoor Fun:
Red River New Mexico, located north of Taos and just south of the Colorado border, is an unpolished gem that is worth exploring. Enjoy a ski lift that takes you from the Red River streets to the top of a family-friendly mountain. Fish the Red River or take a horseback ride into the aspen and pine woods. After all that exercise, you'll be ready for some of the great down home cuisine offered at Red River.
Finding Red River:
Located just 168 miles from the Albuquerque Airport, Red River is accessible by heading north from Taos. Drive north on NM 522 to Questa, then make a right on Highway 38 towards Red River. Map

The drive to Red River is a great way to leave the city and unwind. Enjoy the drive through a beautiful river gorge to Taos and then gradually drive into the beautiful wooded mountain countryside in which the small village of Red River is located.
Red River Ski and Ride Area:
You can ski at Red River without driving up to a ski resort. The lifts are just off the main street! The Ski and Ride area is a great place for recreational skiers and beginners. You can snowboard too. If you’d rather ride, hop on a snowmobile to discover the scenic backcountry or cruise miles of groomed trails all the way up to 11,249-foot Greenie Peak. The local ski school boasts PSIA and AASI certified instructors. Look for reasonably priced ski packages. Phone: 575.754.2223. The season usually runs from November through March.
Ride the Carson National Forest on Horseback:
We had a fantastic time riding along a creek up into the mountains on horseback. We went with Red River Stables. The sure-footed horses and calm demeanor of wrangler Micah Bearce made our trip easy and fun. Their one hour ride is the most popular, but they also offer longer rides and private guide service. Want to ride and go trout fishing? Red River Stables offers a ride to Middle Fork Lake. For more information, see the Red River Stables website.
More Outdoor Adventures:
Hike the trails of Carson National Forest, fish the river or lakes, take an off-road exploration trip or bike the challenging hills of this beautiful area.

Enchanted Forest Cross Country Ski and Snowshoe area is located on top of Bobcat Pass at 9,800 ft and is a great place for families to participate in a fun winter activity without spending a fortune doing it. Not only do they offer great Cross Country Skiing on 33k of set tracks, but they also offer 15k of wonderful Snowshoeing.
Red River Accommodations:
I stayed right on the river and across the river from the ski lifts at the Best Western River's Edge Lodge. There are also condo accommodations and a full service hotel. The prices are reasonable when compared to more trendy ski resorts. More Places to Stay in Red River.
Dining and Entertainment:
I was surprised at how good the food was in the restaurants of Red River. We had dinner The Timbers Steak House right on main street. Amazingly, I enjoyed one of the best filet mignon dinners I had ever had. Some of our group gathered at the bar and enjoyed the entertainment. The next day we went to a fantastic place for breakfast or lunch, Mountain Treasures. The specialties were surprisingly diverse. Enjoy such ethnic delights as Kolaches, Muffolettas (Mediterannean style sandwiches), and Kolubens. For breakfast, they feature home made cinnamon rolls.
Red River History:
Red River, a historic mining town, lies in the Sangre de Christo Mountains. Red River has been settled by farmers and cattle ranchers and was part of the gold discovery boom. Red River remains small and is a draw to visitors who want a small town outdoor retreat.
Small Village - Warm Hearts:
Red River's year round population is only a few hundred. And, what I found, when talking with the locals, is that they love their community and warmly welcome visitors. If you want high end shopping and trendy bistros Red River isn't for you. But if you want a warm, family-friendly small town feel I would suggest a getaway to Red River.
