History and Luxury Awaits You at The Grand Canyon's El Tovar:
The Santa Fe Railroad commissioned the construction of El Tovar in 1902. Charles Whittesey, a Chicago architect, designed the structure as a cross between a Swiss chalet and a Norwegian villa.

Originally El Tovar was to be named “Bright Angel Tavern,” but by the time it was completed in 1905 (El Tovar celebrated the 100 year mark recently), it was renamed El Tovar in honor of Pedro de Tovar of the Coronado expedition. This is yet another confusing element in this now Swiss-Norwegian-Spanish style Inn.

El Tovar is built with massive beams hewn or Oregon pine. The first floor has log slabbed siding with corners carefully notched to give the impression of solid logs. Together with the mounted deer, elk and moose, El Tovar has an unusual design and could easily be a hunting lodge belonging to the rich and famous.

No matter what the origin of the design, El Tovar is a Grand Canyon landmark. The beautiful dining room with large picture windows overlooking the canyon retains the historic artwork and murals of indigenous peoples. The lobby is rustically elegant with beautiful gift shops and a fireplace where visitors can gather to wait for their dinner reservation. On the front deck is a row of wooden rocking chairs where, weather permitting, hotel guests can relax and read or watch the visitors go by.
