Reno, the self-proclaimed Biggest Little City in the World, is much more than a gambling mecca. I was surprised to find that Reno is surrounded by beautiful forests and mountains. The Truckee River runs right through the middle of Reno, providing a cool oasis for summer visitors. Reno has biking paths, parks, museums and so much more. Here are some great things to do in Reno, Nevada.The National Auto Museum
Whether you love the truly old cars or want to revel in nostalgia for a few hours, the National Auto Musuem is a must. The museum, located just two blocks from downtown Reno, was formerly known as the Harrah Collection. You can find the museum at 10 South Lake Street ((corner of Lake & Mill). The phone number is (775) 333-9300. Entry fees range from $3 for children to $9.00 for adults. They have an amazing selection of classic cars as well as interesting visiting exhibits like the current Topless Convertibles of the 50s.
Kayak Through the Middle of Reno
You can sunbathe on the river banks, play in the rapids or Kayak the Truckee right through the middle of the city. The kayak park is located in the heart of Reno's bustling downtown hotel-casino and booming arts district.. Its the only whitewater course running through the middle to a city. Public Art
Reno has some interesting art. From the trail along the Truckee to the grounds of the City Hall. More on Renos Public Art. If you enjoy art, Reno has the Nevada Museum of Art. The museum is located at 160 West Liberty Street. Entry fees range from $10 for adults to $1.00 for kids.
Fleischmann Planetarium and Science Center
If you're looking for a great family destination just minutes from downtown Reno, check out the Fleischmann Planetarium on the UNR campus. The Planetarium shows a variety of dome films that the entire family will enjoy, and there's a free museum and science center located inside the Planetarium. Website.
Visit Carson City for History
Carson City, just 30 minutes from Reno, is the capitol of Nevada. Its an unassuming town, but worth a stop just to soak up the charm of the vintage homes and gardens. Walk Reno
