Top 5 San Antonio, Texas Restaurants

By Elizabeth R. Rose, About.com

The restaurants of San Antonio are spiced up with a little history and a big portion of outdoor ambiance. They are geared toward those who will sit awhile and enjoy the scenery. Most have outdoor seating and are well-suited to a lazy afternoon sipping a Margarita in the shade. We have chosen some of the restaurants that have a tradition of fine food and great locations.

1. Casa Rio House

The first restaurant on The San Antonio Riverwalk. Casa Rio (river house) was established in 1946. They feature great traditional Mexican food and one of the best Riverwalk locations in San Antonio. Casa Rio was the first San Antonio business to open its doors to the River and take advantage of the River's setting. Canoes, gondolas, and paddle boats, evolving into tour and dinner boats, began here and helped create the Riverwalk of today. Indoor and outdoor seating.

2. The Guenther House

Carl Hilmar Guenther, the founder of Pioneer Flour Mills, built this elegant home in 1860. The Guenther House is located on a bend of the San Antonio River, at the foot of King William, one of the oldest historical districts in Texas. You can walk to The Guenther House from the central Riverwalk area but it is quite a distance. I especially enjoy The Guenther House for breakfast but visitors will enjoy their eclectic menu any time of the day. Indoor and outdoor seating.

3. Jim Cullem's Landing

The Landing is located on the beautiful San Antonio Riverwalk. It's not so much the food but the music! Enjoy first class jazz accompanied by a drink or meal. The Jim Cullum Jazz Band, America's premier 7-piece Classic Jazz ensemble, plays Monday through Saturday beginning at 8:00 PM. On Sunday nights, the popular San Antonio jazz group Small World takes over on the outside patio. Indoor and outdoor seating.

4. Zuni Grill

Zuni Grill features Southwest cuisine that's an eclectic blend of South Texas favorites, grilled specialties, the freshest ingredients, and inspired combination by award-winning chefs. If you like food with a bit of "zip," you'll love Zuni Grill. Indoor and outdoor seating right on the Riverwalk.

5. Texas Land & Cattle Steak House

You can't go to Texas without enjoying a good Texas steak, can you? This restaurant, decorated with old west cowboy pictures and gear serves up a great meal. There are many locations, but our favorite is on the Riverwalk. Indoor seating.
