Javelinas on Parade is just another one of a series of beautifully decorated animal statues all decked out for charitable causes. I have seen cows in Portland, Oregon, Painted Ponies and more. But, Javelinas? Those snorty little cactus-eating porkers? On a recent visit to Sedona I became enamored with the Javelinas. It must be the talent of the artists in the community. Each one I saw was more spectacular than the last. They were all different and all a great deal of fun to see and photograph.
The event was launched in October of 2006 and will run 18 months. The Javelinas on Parade will be on display throughout the Sedona area for approximately 18 months at which time they will be sold at auction. Proceeds from the auction will be used to support the participating artists, to fund arts programming and scholarships through the Sedona Arts Festival and for marketing of the Arts through the Chamber of Commerce Tourism Bureau.
The Javelina exhibit makes a great walking tour of Sedona (with driving in between). Here is a map to get you started.
Locate 10 Javelinas, turn in your form to the Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center, and you may just win a two night getaway in Sedona. Now that sounds like a great reason to go "pig hunting." (Sorry, Wilbur!).
