History:
You may wonder why you see such things as German bakeries and German restaurants in the heart of the Texas Hill Country. Fredericksburg was founded by German settlers. In 1846, a group of settlers left New Braunfels headed for the present site of Fredericksburg, Texas.
On May 8, 1846, the German pioneers reached their destination - a small town called Fredericksburg was founded at a point 4 miles north of the Pedernales River, later called Baron Creek.

Texas Hill Country Wineries:
The Texas Hill Country is one of the leading wine destinations in the United States. You can bike the wine country, take a Wine Trail tour or stop in at a few wineries as you travel.
Wildflowers:
The area around Fredericksburg is known for spring wildflowers. Fredericksburg hosts such events as Wildflower and Wine Lunch, a Bluebonnet Festival and a Wildflower celebration out at Wildseed Farms.
Nimitz Museum and National Museum of the Pacific War:
It began as a tribute to Fredericksburg local, Admiral Nimitz, but now Fredericksburg is home to a major World War II Musuem showcasing the stories of participants in the the Pacific theater of World War II. More on the National Museum of the Pacific War.
Walk the History of Fredericksburg:
The Fredericksburg Visitors Bureau offers a fantastic walking map of Historic Fredericksburg sites. You will enjoy the 3.5 mile long main street with 100 year old native limestone homes, churches and museums. You can get the map at the Visitors Center at 302 E. Austin in downtown Fredericksburg.
Peaches:

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area:
Want to hike some of the wine, peaches and food off? A wonderful location for hiking and camping is Enchanted Rock Park. If you dare, climb to the top of the pink granite dome. More on Enchanted Rock Park.

Fredericksburg is surprising. If you visited there 10 years ago you may have enjoyed a German meal and a walk through a town dotted with historic buildings. Today, Fredericksburg is close to becoming a major culinary tourism destination. The town already boasts some major art galleries and a main street full of very nice shops. Add in a little biking and hiking and you have a destination that is sure to please.
