If you are on the lookout for a guest ranch getaway for women, here’s all you need to know about women’s getaway weekends at Rancho de los Caballeros in Wickenburg, Arizona.
Yes, the historic Wickenburg dude ranch, recognized by their Sun C brand, caters to women and takes care of them well! Once acres of desert known only to the coyotes and cowboys, Rancho de los Caballeros was developed as a winter destination for well-to-do families in the 40’s and 50’s. With the passage of time, the ranch continued to upgrade their facilities and programs while maintaining the best ranch traditions that kept visitors coming back year after year.
When I heard that the Ranch featured special getaway packages for women, I had to check it out. I knew that Rancho de los Caballeros catered to families, but what would it feel like going to the ranch for a weekend sans family members?
Finding a Friend for the Getaway
First I had to decide who to invite. The girls’ weekends are great for groups of women who golf together or ride together, for a mom and daughter or even for sisters.
I love horses and riding is always high on my list of things to do when I go to a guest ranch. So what did I do? I invited a friend who doesn’t ride and isn’t particularly interested in going to the corral to hang out and pet the horses. I knew I was safe in inviting her because she loves historic places and the beauty of the natural desert as much as I do. She figured she’d just sit by the fire under the massive Sun C copper chimney in the lobby and read while I was out riding. (That was until she looked at all the activities listed on the Ranch website!)
She also had dined at the ranch and knew of the reputation for fine food and excellent service. Couple that with the anticipation of a magenta-colored prickly pear margarita and she was as excited about going to Rancho de los Caballeros as I was.
Selecting the Weekend
Rancho de los Caballeros offers several types of weekends of special interest to women.
Divot Divas Diversion – You’ll golf ‘til you drop during this weekend which includes unlimited golf, cart and range balls, a 3-hour group lesson with the golf pro, and an opportunity to play at least 9 holes with one of the Pros.
You will have the opportunity to play all or part of the 18-hole championship course that won the Silver Medal Award from Golf Magazine as one of America’s top 75 resort courses, and is acclaimed by Golf Digest as one of the top five in Arizona!
The Divot Divas Diversion would be ideal for a group of women who often golf together. The pros are adept at customizing the group lesson to serve all the levels of ability in the group.
The clubhouse serves great lunches and you’ll have fun shopping at the pro shop. It’s filled with name brand golf equipment and clothing as well as Rancho de los Caballeros logo items.
If you can tear yourself away from the golf course, you can take advantage of any of the ranch activities. Be sure and schedule time in for a Spa treatment!
As with all the weekends, you’ll not go hungry. The ranch rates are American Plan with three meals a day included. Breakfast and lunch offer a varied and sumptuous buffet and dinner is more formal with a fantastic four-course menu served by an attentive wait staff. You'll eagerly anticipate the dessert menu with such delights as Vaquero Pie (decadent chocolate mousse cake) and Profiterole (a puff pastry filled with chantilly cream, mixed berries and topped with a rich fudge sauce).
Giddy-Up Gals Weekend - This is for the horse lovers among us. Whether you are a beginning rider or have your own horse, you’ll feel right at home at Rancho de los Caballeros. The weekend includes horse/tack education, personalized riding instruction and unlimited scheduled trail rides.
Want a bit more excitement? You’ll love either watching or participating in the team penning.
The ranch has a reputation for well-trained and healthy horses. In the evenings be sure and find out what time the horses will head back to pasture. The sight of the large herd of Sun C horses galloping away in the sunset is breathtaking.
You’ll have the opportunity to ride with women wranglers. All-women rides are really conducive to some great discussions. On our ride we talked about women who had gone through divorce, lost their self esteem and confidence and gained it all back as they experienced the thrill of skill-building on horseback. There’s just something about a girl and a horse!
After all that riding, you’ll want to head to the Ranch House Spa for a massage or pedicure. You’ll feel right at home with the ranch décor and vistas of the desert.
Save free time for golf and ranch activities including a nature hike with the ranch’s resident Naturalist. And don’t forget to check for western music and entertainment in the Saloon nightly.
