Packing for a Dude Ranch Vacation

It's hard to know what to bring so if you're driving, one strategy is to bring it all!

Packing for the Ranch in December - January - February

In the high country of Wickenburg, Arizona it gets mighty cold in the early morning, evening and nights. Make sure you bring enough clothing to layer. If you plan on riding up where it's windy or taking a jeep excursion (consider the wind chill factor) make sure you bring a hat to cover your ears, gloves and several layers. Polar fleece works wonders.

Packing for the Ranch in Warmer Weather

With the warm desert weather, usually beginning in May and ending early October, swimsuits and shorts are perfect for an afternoon at the pool. When you ride or hike, don't forget to protect yourself from the sun. Wear a broad-brimmed hat. Sunscreen and lip balm are important. And don't forget something to use to carrry your ever-present bottled water.

Year-round at the Ranch - Specialty Clothing and Equipment

According to the ranch, Tennis attire and shoes will help your game at the tennis courts. During the horseback and hay rides, jeans, a long sleeve shirt, cowboy boot and hat with stampede straps will keep you protected in the desert.

On the golf course, wear soft spike golf shoes, or tennis shoes and a collared shirt.

Rancho de los Caballeros has a special request for diners. Dinner attire may consist of a western vest or jacket for guys and "nice casual" for women. You can wear casual ranch attire for breakfast and lunch.

As far as equipment, we found the ranch ever-ready to help us out. I forgot my trusty hiking staff and Dick, the naturalist, carried nice wood hiking staffs in his van for our use. My friend packed all of her golf clubs and found that the golf pro had provided clubs for her to use during her lesson.

You can't go wrong if you bring your own riding gear but if you forget something, the Pro Shop at the golf course has vests, hats and logo items for you to purchase. If you need a bit more, the ranch will take you in to town to shop for western wear.

Footwear

When we packed for our getaway weekend, we laughed because our suitcases were filled with shoes... not trendy strappy little high heeled sandals but shoes for activities. We had our tennis shoes, our sandals for the spa and our day hikers. We even went boot shopping in town for dress boots for dinner and riding boots for horseback riding. You can easily pack 4-5 heavy pair of shoes for a vacation at a dude ranch.
